"The Prisoner's Song"
(the first country song to sell a million records)

Excerpt: "The Prisoner's Song" appears on "The Medieval Music And Songs Of The Troubadors- Early Music Of The 11th Century." It was a commonplace song by the 12 century in southern France and Spain. Variations of it occur all the way up to 20th century."

Alan: The most popular version of this song was sung by Vernon Dalhart in 1924 (linked below).

One of Dalhart's many renditions was almost certainly the version of the song that got the attention of my Dad, William Wellington Archibald.

It is the only song I remember Dad singing.

He sang it with some regularity, often enough for me to have learned the melody and some of the lyrics.

Here are two of Dalhart's many recordings.
