Every couple of months I lunch with a 94 year old retired Air Force general who once confided that during World War II (when Arthur was stationed in China), Ho Chi Minh (who revered Abraham Lincoln) was "a real patriot" who dependably extricated crashed Air Force personnel from mountainous terrain in Indochina where American operatives did not have the ability to undertake rescue operations.
Arthur (who has been my traveling companion twice) has visited over 200 countries - many of them now defunct. He has also visited both poles, twice.
A Berkeley-trained geologist, AWC is still sharp as a tack.
The man has given me a whole "other" view of planetary integrity and the slow unfolding of history guided by the long arc of justice.
Once, when I was hot under the collar about "some damn thing," he said: "Alan, relax. The world you and I would like to see may take a hundred thousand years to manifest."
In the meantime, screw Mattis.
Let the dead bury their dead.
I advocate a national holiday to commemorate Marine Commandant, Major General Smedley Butler, a lifelong Republican and the most decorated American military man of his time.
"Do Wars Really Defend America's Freedom?"
(Homage To Marine Commandant, Major General Smedley Butler)
