Until recent adoption of an "extra innings technicality," games could go on forever.
Consider this...
Twice in major league history, teams have overcome 12 run deficits.
But baseball's Real Hope lies here: On any given day, any major league team can beat any other team!
George Carlin Compares Baseball And Football
And although the following apocryphal story is about football, not baseball, it's a good coda to Carlin.
Dwight Eisenhower observed that "football is the perfect American game: lots of violence punctuated by committee meetings."
Writing these reflections makes me realize something that has always been "hidden in plain sight."
Although my Dad - a native New Yorker - was a lifelong Yankees fan, I "pulled for" the Dodgers from the time I started grammar school. Even as a tyke, it was clear that the Dodgers were the little guys' team, whereas the Yankees were evidently puffed up with a bloated sense of self-importance.
(I must add that my Dad was a big supporter of "the little guy." I remember vividly how he - and a tiny group of Catholic activists - ran considerable risk to desegregate "redlined" Rochester, New York.)
