I did not say Snopes "makes false reports."

I said "Nobody gets it right all the time. But honorable people and honorable organizaions do correct their errors."

My comments referred to "the human condition" and in no way suggested that Snopes deliberately makes false reports.

As far as I know, only Donald Trump makes no false reports.

Indeed, Trump has transcended the human condition and is now imbued with inerrancy and infallibility.

Alan: A case can be made that Trump is a deified replacement of "conservative" "Christianity's" traditional objects of adoration.

Since His Majesty makes no mistakes, The Donald has no need to correct them.

In fact, at every opportunity Trump doubles down on duplicity and deceit.

Even so, let's play the game.

And let's play it on your terms!

Find one instance (and cite the source) in which Snopes' calculated "falsehood" resulted in "damage done while the subject is still relevant" and then "the correction came too late" to remedy real, provable harm. 

I'll even get you started.

By googling the phrase "what has Snopes been wrong about" I discovered the following article from the Washington Times, a revered "conservative" newspaper founded in 1982 by Korean weirdo and "latter day messiah" Sun Myung Moon. https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/apr/29/the-unreliable-facts-of-a-fact-checking-site/

When the logic of the Washington Times article is not just embarrassing, it's belly-laughable. 

According to the author, Snopes, in essence, schemed to make it illegal to sell The Bible.

Wow. (I am often struck by the banality of Snopes' vilifiers.)

Contemporary American "conservatism" is "all about" alarmism, fearmongering, decontextualization and the attempted normalization of absurdity. 

Consider this gem (one of 5000 provable lies Trump has told since inauguration): Global warming "is a Chinese hoax to make U.S. manufacturing noncompetitive." (I wonder how tomorrow's victims of Hurricane Michael - or the growing number of people torched annually by California's flaming forests - will conceive Trump's "hoax" claim.)

Clearly The Deplorable One can shoot somebody on 5th Avenue - in broad daylight - and not lose any votes.

What goes unacknowledged however is that Trump continually serves his followers shit sandwiches with pus-gargle chasers.

And you guys "eat it up."

You'll have to read the entire Washington Times article yourself to grasp the scope of the author's intellectual contortionism as he labors with labyrinthine "logic" to "prove" Snopes' self-interested mendacity.

The author's logic is at least as tortured as the tweet-ravings of the shrunken soul and "Master of Mendacity" who occupies The White House.

Alex, America has no interest in banning books. 

And the plutocratic power structure (of which Trump is a bulwark) has even less interest in book banning. 

To the contrary...

"The Ungodly Rich" know full well how co-optation works; that the wider the scope of free speech (at least as it relates to the written word), the easier it is to disable-and-control "uppity intellectuals" by giving them full rein.  

On the other hand, if 1st Amendment freedoms were actually curtailed, people with rebellious natures would be much more capable of animating movements that oppose The Machine: Faced with the abridgment of 1st Amendment freedoms, rebels would have a crystalizing grievance. 

The inviolable view of "The Ruling Class" is this: "Let them say whatever they want, and these would-be rebels become de facto castrinos."

Conduct research into Snopes' "falsehoods with malice aforethought "and get back to me.

I, and Fred's other readers, can do with a laugh.

Along the way you'll have opportunity to realize that the complete lack of intellectual rigor on the "conservative" side of the aisle leaves ideologues with no coherent case unless they take rhetorical refuge in "fake news" and "alternative facts." 

You are "high" on the presumed righteousness of your "cause" Alex.

You are a "true believer" with youthful, evangelical passion.

But if you actually poke around a bit, you'll see that "there's no there there." 

None.

Nada.

Niente.

Zilch.

Lots of smoke and mirrors!

And, of course, "The Gospel According To Donald."

But other than that, it's all miasma - The Swamp Itself.
