Paul Ryan, Ayn Rand And "The Good Germans' Quest" For A Hobnailed Boot To "Make It Alright"

Dear F,

Thanks for your email.

The power of the presidency has expanded yuuugely in recent decades and both parties have played along.

Perhaps both sides of the aisle saw that gridlock was baked into the congressional cake and if anything were to get done the federal government would need a strong executive.

The expanded power of the presidency is revealed in the president's ability to intervene militarily without a thought to subjecting war-making decisions to congressional oversight as required by the constitution.

At regular intervals humankind experiences fits of authoritarianism when "the fascist-strong-man impulse" comes to the fore.

We are passing through such a fit now and it remains to be seen how long it will last.

As a rule, such fits are short-lived because fascism is all "promise" with very little net benefit, particularly to the dimwit sheep most prone to submit to Mr. Bluster - whoever that particular asshole happens to be at a given moment in time.

After WWII, remember how "the good Germans" all swore they had "no idea!" that Jews were being exterminated?

They either knew - or had a moral obligation to know.

But like good the good burghers they were, "cultured" and supposedly "educated" Germans played "ostritch" with the unsurprising outcome that their irresistible bourgeoise quest for safety was a silent partner in The Final Solution.

As the legal chestnut puts it: "Silence is consent."

Dear F,

Thanks for the update.

Ryan is exhibit #1 for ideological purity.

His submission to Ayn Rand is the flip side of Catholicism's perpetual flirtation with fascism. (It may be coincidental but Hitler was a cradle Catholic whose mother was "very devout." https://catholicexchange.com/was-hitler-catholic)

Breaking news, Ryan is not running again. Wonder if this will give him a backbone and go out like a lion or is he happy to just get out with tax cuts his legacy? I predict the latter. After all, what would Ayn Rand do?
