Alan: Mortensen's support for Jill Stein partakes of the same flippancy -- the same whimsical willingness to "roll the dice with Satan" -- that characterizes Trump supporters: "Let's see if we can shake things up by flipping off The System."
I agree with Mortensen's conclusion that we need a parliamentary system, a position I argued with my "two-party" Dad 40 years ago.
But here's the nub.
As long as we're embedded in a two-party, winner-take-all system, it is foolish to risk the election of a full-fledged fascist without first undertaking the "parliamentary groundwork."
In the end, there is really not much politics can accomplish in the short term although political disaster can strike in a minute.
In light of politics' intrinsic limitations, I hold that our foremost civic obligation is not questing after "ideals" but to prevent the election of lunatics.
For me, it is always tonic to recall that 150 years after Christianity became Rome's state religion, the empire collapsed and Europe embarked 700 years of Darkness.
I understand Mortensen's idealistic logic.
His politics however are a catastrophe waiting to happen.
