Same-Sex Marriage And "America: Love It Or Leave It"

Dear John,

Same-sex marriage cannot be justified in light of the constitution's equal protection clause.

Whatever our opinion of same-sex marriage, it is fundamentally anti-American to oppose it.

I think Pope Francis recognizes this.

PS I think the national conversation would be more intelligent -- and more productive -- if social conservatives openly acknowledged their opposition to a number of clear-cut constitutional guarantees. Although I have no desire to issue any ultimatum -- much preferring the "largest possible tent" -- the situation recalls the old conservative chestnut: "America: Love It Or Leave It."

Judge strikes down Michigan's ban on gay marriage

Federal Judge Bernard Friedman ruled Friday in a case in which two Detroit-area nurses who’ve been partners for eight years claimed the ban violated their rights under the U.S. Constitution.
