Oscar Mayer says its "Wake Up & Smell the Bacon" app and plug-in device will turn an iPhone into a bacon-scented alarm clock. (Oscar Mayer photo)
In a brazen attempt to "bring home the bacon," meat producer Oscar Mayer has come up with an iPhone app that doubles as an alarm clock and gives off the sound and scent of sizzling slices of pig loin and belly.
Yes, that would be your bacon-wakin' wake-up call.
According to news reports, bacon lovers can set the alarm within the app, plug an attachment into the iPhone's headphone jack, then lie back and get a good night's sleep -- until, that is, the sizzling starts and the aroma of bacon wafts from the attachment and across their pillows.
"With nearly 2 million mentions of #bacon on Instagram, it seems people never get tired of bacon," Tom Bick, the company's senior director of integrated marketing and advertising, said in a statement. "That's why our team decided to develop a device to give folks what they long for most."
There's a catch, though: Users hungry for what Bick calls the "first-ever bacon-scented mobile device" will have to cool their jets for awhile. Seems that bacon lovers must apply online atwakeupandsmellthebacon.com for a chance get the free device, which won't be sold in stores. Oscar Mayer, based in Madison, Wisc., is offering the app only through April 4.
The bacon-scented alarm app and device come from -- are you ready for this? -- the Oscar Mayer Institute for the Advancement of Bacon. Oscar Mayer did not immediately respond to questions about how the app produces the bacon smell.
Bick says the app will give "bacon aficionados a new reason to welcome their morning alarm clocks."
Heck, it gives many of us a reason just to get out of bed.
