15 Great 'Hallelujah' Covers

April 30, 2011
“Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen is one of the greatest songs ever written. So it’s no surprise that leonardcohenfiles.com currently lists 2,040 covers of Leonard Cohen songs. And that doesn’t count all the YouTubers posting their “Cover of Jeff Buckley’s ‘Hallelujah.’”
15. Amanda Palmer                                                                                                                                                     Her voice may not be perfect, but she sounds on the verge of tears, so it’s understandable.

14. Beirut                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Only person to do it using a playing card.
13. Willie Nelson
Nelson’s warble fits the mood of the song perfectly, allowing him to sound vulnerable over the swell of some steel guitar.
12. Bono
Bono completely changes the song, turning it into a spoken-word electronica… thing. The work isn’t wonderful, but it’s probably the most original take on the song.
11. Casey Pitel
Ignore the dizzying camera shots in this video and focus on the great voice.
10. Alexandra Burke w/ Elton John
The former X-Factor champion teams up for Elton John live for this crowd-pleaser.
9. Regina Spektor
Spektor’s been playing this one live for years. This lovely version’s from way back in 2005.
8. Rufus Wainwright
Wainwright’s excellent version gained some popularity when it was featured on theShrek soundtrack.
7. Justin Timberlake
Don’t laugh; this is seriously really damn good.
6. John Cale
Cale’s version was featured on a Leonard Cohen tribute album in 1991, and it’s his rendition that has become the template for most covers in subsequent years.
5. K.D. Lang
Standing ovation rightfully deserved.
4. Brandi Carlile
The gorgeous strings from the Seattle Symphony add just the right amount of drama to Carlile’s cover.
3. Ari Hest
Just a guy and his guitar—all this song really needs.
2. Over The Rhine
What a gift this Over The Rhine Christmas tour staple is.
1. Jeff Buckley
There’s a reason why so many people think this was his song.
