Dear E,
Stuart Brand is not easily bamboozled - and he supports new generation nuclear power.
Brand and his fellows see nuclear as the only practical way to turn the CO2 tide before Tipping Point.
Personally, I have come to believe that renewed emphasis on nuclear power will only delay robust implementation of solar, a technology that is already "globally viable."
On the other hand, solar energy's "lift-off" has been notably slow.
As a practical matter, "industrial-strength capitalists" may comprise the only "investment pool" willing to go "whole hog" on behalf of a "carbon free technology" -- i.e., new generation nuclear -- a technology that is 1.) much less horrifying than earlier generations of nuclear power, and 2.) a technology that would change the carbon equation quickly at a time when full-throttle implementation of some carbon-free technology may be our only salvation.
Here is a promising article on the solar side of the fence. "By 2032, Saudi Arabia Will Produce A Third Of Its Electricity Through Solar Energy"
