I have long conceived God as the Magnum Mysterium and generally try to widen my scope.

I have seen too much stunting - not to mention downright damage - caused by pious limitation, devout defensiveness and the presumed goodness of what ultimately manifests as "self-mutilation."

Often, our small minds are quick to re-make God in our own image.

And gradually we come to see ourselves as "faithful servants" - ironically in the very act of scarring the divine face.

As I witness putative Christians cheer the caging of children, I am ever more persuaded that "opening" is wiser than "closing" - that bridge-building is preferable to Fortunato's wall.
