The tragedy of today’s Republican Party lies partly in how far it has fallen —
and that’s my column topic today. This is the party of Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, the party that brought us interstate highways and the Environmental Protection Agency. In my state of Oregon, Republican Governor Tom McCall was a hero of the environmental movement and Senator Mark Hatfield was as principled a politician as one could find (it seems incredible by today’s standards, but Hatfield became a Republican because when he was a young man he judged it to be more enlightened on civil rights issues).
