The GOP Has Collapsed Into A Personality Cult

Nicholas Kristof, The New York Times

The tragedy of today’s Republican Party lies partly in how far it has fallen — and that’s my column topic today. This is the party of Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, the party that brought us interstate highways and the Environmental Protection Agency. In my state of Oregon, Republican Governor Tom McCall was a hero of the environmental movement and Senator Mark Hatfield was as principled a politician as one could find (it seems incredible by today’s standards, but Hatfield became a Republican because when he was a young man he judged it to be more enlightened on civil rights issues).

Now the G.O.P. has collapsed into a personality cult of a hothead who incites a crowd to repeat an ugly chant about a Somali-American member of Congress. Party officials condemn the label “racist” but not the racism. And on substantive issues from fiscal policy to health care to foreign policy, the G.O.P. is now incoherent. It stands for nothing.
Something similar has happened to other conservative parties around the world, from Britain (Boris Johnson?!) to Italy, Australia to Brazil. Conservatism too often has devolved into a kind of angry and unprincipled populism revolving around charismatic leaders. Here’s my column on the collapse of conservatism.

Here’s my essay about the collapse of conservatism, particularly the tragic decline of the Republican Party into a demagogue’s personality cult. That’s why the 2020 election will matter so much: A good walloping just might force the party into a reckoning and rebirth so that we get back the center-right party that our nation sorely needs. Please read!
