The 2020 Democratic Ticket

More and more it seems that a Warren-Sanders/Sanders-Warren ticket might be just the ticket this time around.

    • Doug Nicholas Julian Foster That’s what the corporate Dems want you to think. Biden is not good. Better than Trump? Marginally. But that’s an incredibly low bar, which doesn’t even reach “good.” I’m with Tom.

    Voltaire is well-known for his insight "The best is enemy of the good." 

    In the upcoming election, I define "The Good" as electability.

    In the last presidential cycle I donated multiple times to Bernie's campaign and have great admiration for the man.

    But his avowed (democratic) socialism - which I also admire - is perfectly suited for demolition by the Republican Noise Machine.

    Everyday people warm to Joe. And it is in his bones to relate to "the common man." 

    It is useful to recall the Adlai Stevenson supporter who called out: "Mr. Stevenson, every thinking American is behind you!" 

    To which Adlai replied, "Yes Madam. But we need a majority." 

    I am imbued with enough "ironic distance" to understand that it may be time for the American Empire to collapse. The long arc of justice may even require collapse. 

    But it is also true that former empires -- Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, England, Holland, Germany -- tend to become remarkably convivial places to live. 

    Even so, I still believe -- or would like to believe -- that the United States is (in Lincoln's words) "the last, best hope of earth."

    Therefore -- in keeping with my core political conviction that a citizen's fundamental responsibility is to keep mad men (and mad women) out of office -- I approach 2020 with a completely pragmatic view: By my lights, Biden-Harris is the best-suited ticket to wrest power from the solipsist-maniac whose re-election will sound the death knell for Lincoln's hope.
