Alan: I don't buy Reitman's far-fetched view of Melania but the rest seems not only possible or probable but likely.
It’s far simpler than the other answers, if you’re asking a qualified MD with extensive experience in mental health and brain aging issues, which I am.
He suffers from paranoid personality disorder, overlapping with NPD, but he is now at the end-stages of the trajectory of these disorders. He is actually an entirely dependent senior at this point, so all he can do is Twit Fits and call everyone he can think of to ask “how to get out of this one”.
At the end-stage of these disorders, low cunning no longer works and then they gradually lose all sense of identity. A clinician is never sure of brain diagnoses until the patient is stressed in some way; in fact that’s true of most mental/emotional concerns. Mueller’s investigation is stress in NEON!
DJT has been in the disinhibited stage of dementia since before the campaign, which is what looks like arrogance, theatrics, hating on others, and hysteria until recently; once D’s flipped the House, even he knew it was over, although he can’t fathom why, so he reflexively blames everyone in what we term “flight of ideas” and “tangentiality”.
Generally, at this point seclusion sets in, unless at a DJT Rally, his only source of adulation, but that support is waning as well… and why are we paying for him to campaign while he’s supposedly serving already anyway?
His shaming and banning of Acosta was the classic last gasp and for precise reasons: Acosta is one of the most level-headed, gracious, competent white male WH correspondents we the people need and respect; there are several others just as professional as well. The dude could make a bundle as a model, but he appears devoid of vanity, which renders him even more appealing.
In other words, he is everything Donald ever wanted to be, but never could be, except the handsome part. POTUS was very handsome, charming and eloquent when I met him 30 years ago, but the Tell was in his eyes, even then.
Just like my mother who had a very similar personality, but never lost cognitive abilities, and blew her head off at 80, they both had acquired everything they ever thought they wanted, but still ended up shunned/avoided by all other humans. His donors are fading fast and no one qualified will work with him.
He is now “the most hated man in Europe”, possibly even the globe, because no one will admit openly his symptoms are indicative of brain disorders, which, evaluated by MDs, would prove that his neurological status concludes him unfit.
Donald’s loyalists and his descendants will all get dragged down with him, circling the drain until/unless they get therapeutic and legal guidance. If they’ve already committed crimes on his behalf, they can still avert their own crisis, but they need to do so with professionals who understand the psychiatry of “closed group systems” like the WH, as well as that of individuals, in addition to forensic expertise. Melania is possibly the only exception, because I sincerely believe she entered his life following orders from her real Bosses, who are not citizens of the USA. We’ve seen this movie before. Maddow uncovered many fascist plants by 2017 in minute detail with documentary evidence; she’s as detailed as Mueller and although as affable as they come, she is shockingly brilliant and work ethic off the charts. MSNBC really has many MVPs on their staff, loaded with integrity. CNN of course has generally employed excellent journalists for far longer.
Even Fox and Hannity are waking up to this fantasy now on its death spiral.
With 100+ women and impressive diversity in the House now, the People have made clear we want this American experiment to continue evolving/improving and DJT wouldn’t even understand this sentence, let alone ever get on board, or at least learn to compromise; he lost those faculties long before the election.
And this Dear Readers, is exactly why no one on TV has interviewed qualified MDs to comment on current risks to himself and the people from a psych POV.
And that is why he can’t summon the strength to stand up at 100 years of armistice’ solemn ceremony for any hour with an umbrella. Its’ either huddle away and nurse grievances or he can get a brief euphoric rush from these idiot rallies, but once over, it’s right back to a vacuous existence and he can hardly ever get his way anymore, which is something he has never experienced before in his life of Affluenza before becoming POTUS. It’s just all too much to bear.
This is the man with the most powerful job on earth, hiding away with his only friend: gluttony, and demanding a miracle from anyone who will still listen.
If nominees were required to undergo thorough health, legal, and financial background evals, all of this complete loss of time, energy, resources, and damn near the complete erosion of all systems democratic of our beloved USA would have been completely prevented.
So the Constitution needs serious updating, first of all, and then we need to create absolute criteria for anyone running for any government office, with ongoing evals as long as they continue to serve us. The founders never imagined the nuclear or digital age, extreme weapons and so on: women and non white men were scarcely more than beasts of burden then! Yet they were visionaries regardless and none of them agreed on anything except the IDEA of self-determinism, egalite’/fraternite’/liberte’. It’s time for a comprehensive update and critical assessment of how our current policies reflect or do not reflect the Spirit of the Constitution, if not the literal content of it.
Put on your seatbelts… it’s gonna be a helluva ride come Jan 2019.
“POTUS was very handsome, charming and eloquent when I met him 30 years ago, but the Tell was in his eyes, even then.” Everything you see in Trump today was there in the mid Eighties when I got interested in Trump’s business Career, the idiotiocy of his Atlantic City Casinos defied belief. Now it’s very much more pronounced and in much starker relief. Mika on Morning Joe was interesting when she commented that he’s the same Trump as before the election just darker, much angrier, and has completely lost the ability to laugh at himself. For myself I think you are right and the extreme stress is causing Trump to unravel.
I am no fan of DJT and would be happy to see him depart the White House but I have to question your competence to medically diagnose him.
I know you say you met him 30 years ago but that, as far as I know, is tantamount to saying you do not know him as far as medical diagnosis is concerned.
I also believe that even if you are a doctor (not sure what a Medicolegal Expert Reviewer is) you are not allowed to diagnose patients you have not medically examined in person.
Is your diagnosis a medical one or a political one?
You have every right to ask and many others have as well, although not nearly so politely, however I’ve seen more footage of him over more decades than I’ve ever observed any patient in my entire life, gathered testimony from countless people including strong supporters who know him very well. I’ve heard all 3 wives discuss him more than I ever could in an office-setting. I’ve heard all his family members discuss him and watched them relate. I’ve had 3 years to observe him very closely and I’ve cared for countless patients almost exactly like him… but without his wealth or power. My entire approach is a medical one; the politics are the symptom, not the cause of his situation.
I’ve not offered final diagnoses, just most likely ones and these vary dramatically in severity; there would be much tighter, specific clarifications/diagnoses with a full team of providers examining and testing him in person. What I provided was really rather generic.
Until Mueller and all other investigations are completed, further details on this will simply have to be tabled…. I can’t be sure of the sociopathic backdrop until all that info is public, along with some other holes in his history, but it’s a monumental amount of evidence already that we clinicians hardly ever have access to, yet successfully manage patients with far less evidence available to draw upon.
In a sense, you are right Sam - the general rule is 'no diagnosis without professional contact in a clinical environment's, but it's actually not at all unusual for professionals to comment on public figures, based on available information.
Indeed, reams of material have been written on controversial figures like Stalin, Hitler, and many other politicians, artists, musicians etc
It's actually not that difficult to form a reasonably sound opinion based on observed behaviour, known utterances and so forth.
That may not amount to a full 'medical diagnosis', but, for well-known figures, it's certainly possible to arrive at a pretty accurate guess as to what a medical diagnosis would be - you don't need to have met Kurt Cobain, for example, to deduce from his biography, with reasonable confidence, that he suffered from a substance abuse disorder with a comorbid depressive illness.
It would be silly to question that 'diagnosis' on the basis that the person making it never personally met him. Some disorders are rather easily identified from known behaviour alone.
And this Dear Readers, is exactly why no one on TV has interviewed qualified MDs to comment on current risks to himself and the people from a psych POV.
Maybe that, but also no real qualified psych MD would ever want to diagnose someone without access to the patient and a proper evaluation.
And consent. Yes. Even the pussy-grabber in chief needs to consent to a psychological assessment. Good luck with that
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume this is meant sincerely. Your concerns about my qualifications are addressed if you read the entire feed. It amuses me when Anchors or politicians even lawyers describe NPD, depression, etc. almost on the hour, but I guess they’ve all conducted comprehensive evaluations of their own.
Never once have I heard them or their interviewers say they cannot possibly diagnose him…. they do…. all the time. Schwartz, who wrote DJT’s book describes him almost exactly as I do, but no one bats an eye, but leave it to a qualified MD to offer presumptive diagnoses, -pending comprehensive testing and final conclusions with a diagnostic team - and the shaming and sarcastic responses are sure to follow.
If you had read the thread before reacting reflexively to criticize me, we both would have saved time and energy …. I guess ridicule is just too irresistible in the moment for some to do their due diligence first.
And if you think DJT needs to consent for assessment of altered mentation, well, I’ll just leave it at: please do your due diligence first. before attacking.
I am in no doubt about the verity of your assessment of Trump. His behaviour and the things he uttered and did has all the hallmark of a madman or one in the throes of one.
I for one appreciate the effort you have given to give us an insight on this POTUS who is not only going to be the downfall o...
That’s the difference between a layperson and a professional.
A layperson is free to say anything. And it’s our responsibility to take it for exactly what it is; an opinion of an unqualified layperson.
A professional - one who is qualified, responsible, and ethical - Is duty bound to say they canno...
I’m not bitter, petty, or outside of ethical boundaries … I haven’t the time or inclination to counter your points, when I’ve already done so on this same thread ….
…those that irresponsibly believe social media and TV bytes blindly are exactly how we got into this mess in the first place …
Would Reagan have passed the testing?
It seems a political party would not want tests run as long as their figurehead was winning elections : (
Reagan probably would have done adequately during the campaign, but once elected, he gradually developed dementia, and that bullet that hit his lung near the vital vessels really accelerated his deterioration. Nancy was his de facto POTUS once his symptoms precluded him performing the job himself...
I remember a British comedy show using puppets of political figures. In one scene Reagan had a meeting with the Russian leader of the time (Kruschev?). While he was sitting across the table from his enemy, his brain escapes and run off. The Russian leader tried to out-stare Reagan , but was overw...
definitely the GOP until now, but far less so the Dems, and I don’t believe the GOP will be so cavalier just to get the super wealthy tax cuts anymore. Most know by now, even all those millions in perqs/donations can’t compensate for professional suicide, assets seized, and even convictions with ...
Do you mean Trump and associates, or GOP figures are facing this more broadly?
How often does a qualified MD get to see their patient perform on the job vs. when in an office setting? I would think a patient is somewhat guarded in a Dr. setting, especially when their mental state is being evaluated. Wouldn’t “on the job” observation be a plus in evaluating a patient? I have...
About 30 of them broke with that tradition in the case of DJT. They feared, as apparently Dr. Reitman does, because DJT is DANGEROUS.
I would say in general terms, that it’s really not wise to diagnose from a distance. HOWEVER, there are exceptions. I know of no psychiatrist who ever evaluated Hit...
Yeah, I am afraid you lost me at the “Melania is actually a foreign spy” stage. That was some serious forward planning to have a spy marry someone who divorces people regularly in the hope he would be a political office holder in 15 years time.
that was the only part of my answer that is speculation, but based on a lot of background research on her that never hits social media … it was a risk to bring this up, but the medical commentary are accurate presumptive diagnoses until fully examined by a treatment team to further clarify the nu...
