Alan: For a political party to produce Bush-Cheney and then spend the Obama administration is like being responsible for Roy Campanella's paraplegia and then complaining he doesn't play ball like he did in the good ol' days.
How did this monstrosity come to pass?
Half a century ago, the GOP realized it no longer had a political philosophy that would appeal to enough liberal young people to win national elections. To battle this sea change in America demographics, Republicans concocted "the Southern strategy," wooing grumpy racists from that sector of the citizenry which had remained nominally Democratic because Lincoln was Republican. After cobbling together a potential majority with the irate, ignorant dregs of American society, they managed occasional White House victories by tossing gobs of red meat at bloodthirsty good ol' boys and their subservient women. Now, the demographic tide is swelling anew and there is no hope for the Republican Party unless it renounces the evil twins of ignorance and stupidity. What is overwhelmingly likely to prevent this outcome is that moving to the left makes them lukewarm Democrats rather than renewed Republicans.
