In the global fight to equalize the LGBTQ community, the country of New Zealand legalized same-sex marriage, becoming the first country in Asia to do so.
Two-thirds of the New Zealand's parliament voted in favor of the bill, which will amend the country’s 1955 Marriage Act to include same-sex couples.
Upon completion of the vote this week, the audience members from the public viewing stands broke into song, marking the event with “Pokarekare Ana,” a traditional Maori love ballad.
But before that, came this video: the funniest and most endearing argument for marriage equalityyou’ve ever heard, as explained by MP Maurice Williamson. His "big gay rainbow speech" attacks extremist arguments and settles moderate concerns alike.
For all the catastrophizing about the consequences of legalizing same-sex marriage, Williamson is emphatic that the passing of the bill means that life will go on exactly as before. "All we are doing is allowing two people who love each other to have that love recognized by way of marriage. That's all."
One can only hope U.S. lawmakers are listening.
