"The Muslim Mother Theresa," Nicholas Kristof

<nil>
That’s me with my friend and hero, Edna Adan, who founded a maternity hospital in Somaliland and battles maternal death and FGM there; she was also a figure in our book “Half the Sky.” Edna in more recent years started a university training health workers, and as a result the maternal mortality rate is inching down, and the most grievous kind of FGM (infibulation) is declining as well. Sometimes in the operating room, the surgeon, nurse and anesthetist are now all female — an astonishing feat in a country that banned girls from school when Edna was a girl. I posted the photo on Instagram and a reader responded that after reading about Edna years ago, she had changed careers and become a nurse-midwife — and now she hopes to volunteer at Edna’s hospital. And by the way, for any of you doctors or nurses, Edna welcomes volunteers.
