Whatever else we humans may be, we are certainly simian. Periodically, our chest-thumping nature gets the better of us and we "go animal." In this zoologically-regressed state, homo sapiens' ability to reason is overwhelmed by the force of visceral feeling. What emerges is the tribe, the herd, the pack...
